Cornerstone College

Salt River, Cape Town

A focussed but impactful intervention transformed this harsh asphalt and concrete landscape into a protected, green space. The newly converted college building fronted onto an exposed parking lot which sloped uncomfortably towards the building from the busy main road. By removing the cars and cutting into the slope, we were able to create a generous forecourt to the college. Boukuns architects in turn opened up the building to provide a generous entrance onto the forecourt.

The lowered ground plane, offers people gathering within or moving through the site a pleasant environment, protected from the traffic, sun and wind. Fynbos planting and Fever Trees bring refreshing greenery into this former industrial area and generous retaining walls provide seating for people waiting for public transport.
