Fountains Hotel

Cape Town CBD

The Fountains Hotel frames the top end of the Heerengracht, overlooking the Adderley Street Fountain. The hotel forecourt spills out onto a small park and a very busy sidewalk that links the adjacent Cape Town Station to the CBD. Our concept proposes to integrate a planned pool with the park while creating a pleasant refuge in the busy and often harsh foreshore environment. Layered planting beds add colour and interest to this part of the city. The planting is designed to facilitate pedestrian thoroughfare but also serve as a sequence of spatial buffers that protect the public open space from the busy road and sidewalk. People step away from the main thoroughfare and sit alongside a secondary walkway while waiting for transport or meeting a friend. Another step away from the road opens up into a sheltered park with a rim-flow trough that softens the ambient noise while creating a degree of separation from the hotel guests and the park users. Built in tables and chairs are provided for people to meet, have their lunch or work and a half-pipe skate ramp and rails helps to bring new activities into the space, especially over the weekend.
