Langebaan Country Estate

Langebaan, Western Cape

The initial townhouse layout for this development envisaged exclusive back yard spaces for the individual homeowners. Our design concept proposed instead, a sequence of private, semi-private and communal spaces that provided a broader range of opportunities for the residents and fostered a more open community. Generous hardwood decks were clipped on to the existing covered patios to provide sunny outdoor living spaces for each home and to connect to the garden beyond. A simple seat at the end of the deck doubles as a retaining wall for a planted berm planted with local dune Strandveld. The berms provide filtered views onto the common lawn space and a degree of privacy for the semi-private terraces. The sculpting of the ground plane creates interesting and settled spaces and by consolidating the lawn area, residents and their children have a more generous green common for recreation in an indigenous landscape setting.
